Beginner Guide - VIC

WA NT SA NSW QLD VIC TAS

The Goal: Master the 'Shared Space' Shuffle

Build Multi-Modal Neutrality. Victorian trails are often shared with serious mountain bikers, joggers, and horses. Our mission is to build "Trail Manners"—teaching your dog to calmly step aside and wait as others pass. We prioritize Grade 1-2 tracks (easy, flat to gentle, 1-6km) that offer high visibility and facilities (picnics/BBQs) for post-walk "settle" training near dog-friendly cafes.

Summary

In Victoria, the park "Type" is your compass. While National Parks are "No-Go" zones under the National Parks Act, Regional Parks and State Parks are your dog-on-leash havens.

  • Bold Rule (The 20-Meter Zone): Dogs are strictly prohibited within 20 meters of any fixed playground, permanent BBQ area, or organized sporting event.

  • Fixed Lead Only: Unless explicitly signed as off-leash, dogs must be on a fixed leash (max 3m). No retractables—they lack the control needed near bikers, horses, or wildlife.

  • Trail Etiquette: Share the trail! Yield to horses and step aside/sit for mountain bikers to build neutrality.

  • Safety First: 1080 poison baits are lethal to dogs. Ground baiting programs are active across VIC in early 2026; always check parks.vic.gov.au/find-a-park for updates and pack out all waste (no bins).
